The holiday season is upon us, and with it comes all the joy, excitement, and, of course, delicious food! For many, this time of year is filled with cherished moments with family and friends, but it can also bring a side of anxiety if you worry about staying on track with your health goals. If you’re feeling a little stressed about navigating the holiday food scene without derailing your progress, you’re in the right place. Let’s dive into how to overcome the “start over” mentality that often creeps in during the holidays.

The Magic of the Holidays

I’ve always adored the holiday season. Probably because I kick it off earlier than most with my August birthday. Then once that cool breeze kicks up in September I know October is just around the corner. From Halloween candy to Thanksgiving turkey (dark meat fan here!), and all the peppermint mochas and holiday cookies in between, this time of year makes my heart so happy.

But here’s the thing, enjoying the holidays with a healed relationship with food, a thriving metabolism, and body confidence is a game-changer. There’s no fear of binge eating, no guilt over indulging in your favorite treats, and no anxiety about attending holiday parties where you aren’t in control of the menu.

It’s about freedom—freedom to enjoy the holidays without the weight of food guilt.

The “Start Over” Mentality: What Is It?

We’ve all been there. You’re surrounded by holiday treats and the temptation is real. Maybe you have a cookie (or three) and think, “I’ll just start fresh tomorrow.” But then tomorrow comes, and the cycle continues. Soon, you’re telling yourself, “I’ll just wait until the new year to get back on track.”

This “start over” mentality is all too common, especially during the holidays. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Here’s how to shift your mindset and embrace the spirit of the holiday season with confidence and joy.

Tip 1: Don’t Restrict Leading Up to the Holidays

The biggest mistake you can make is restricting yourself before the holidays. Restriction only leads to eventual binging because, let’s face it, our bodies and minds aren’t wired to be deprived of the things we love.

Instead, aim for moderation. If you’re heading to a holiday party in the evening where you know you want to indulge in a glass of champagne and a holiday treat, do it! But be mindful of the foods you eat before. Balance it out with nutrient-dense foods, like a veggie-filled omelet for breakfast or a lean burger for lunch.

And the best way to find this balance? Track your macros! By tracking your proteins, carbs, and fats, you ensure you’re eating the right amount for your goals, allowing you to enjoy the fun foods without guilt.

Tip 2: Strive for Progress, Not Perfection

Perfection doesn’t exist—especially not during the holidays. And it’s not a matter of how much willpower you have to stay away from the festive foods either. It’s natural to indulge a little more than usual, and that’s okay! The key is not to beat yourself up if you’re not perfect with your macro tracking. Remember, it’s about consistency, not perfection. Tracking macros should enhance your life, not overwhelm you.

Tip 3: Don’t Avoid Your Binge Triggers

The holidays are full of potential binge triggers. Social gatherings, holiday treats at work, and festive drinks like peppermint mochas. Trying to avoid these triggers only pushes the problem under the rug, where it’s bound to resurface later. Instead, face these triggers head-on. Allow yourself to enjoy holiday goodies in moderation, without guilt or shame. This is where food freedom lives.

Tip 4: Give Your Body Grace—Bloat Goes Away

Let’s be real: bloating happens, especially when we’re out of our regular routine. Whether it’s from indulging in a few extra sweets or enjoying a glass of wine, a little bloating is no reason to stress. Especially since it is very likely not true fat gain! If you’ve been consistent with your macros and have a healthy metabolism, your body will bounce back. Remember, it takes 3,500 calories to gain one true pound. So, a little indulgence here and there won’t undo all your hard work.
