Ok, my Beautiful Peach, let’s tackle the BIG question: Will you gain weight during a reverse diet? I know this fear can feel overwhelming, especially when you’ve been conditioned by diet culture to live and breathe by the number on the scale. But here’s the thing: the right reverse diet doesn’t just heal your metabolism—it transforms your energy, confidence, and body composition in ways you’ve never imagined.

If you’ve been dieting forever, trying “EVERY diet under the sun,” and still feel stuck in a plateau, this blog is for YOU. Let’s dive into what reverse dieting really is, why it’s so essential, and how to approach it in a way that minimizes fat gain while maximizing results. By the end, you’ll feel empowered to ditch the fear and start your reverse diet journey with confidence!

What is Reverse Dieting?

Reverse dieting is the gradual increase of calorie intake after a prolonged period of restriction. It’s not about eating all the things—it’s a strategic process designed to:
1️⃣ Heal your metabolism after chronic dieting.
2️⃣ Prevent fat gain by easing out of a calorie deficit.
3️⃣ Teach your body to handle more calories efficiently.

Here’s why it matters: when you’ve been dieting for a long time, your body adapts to the restriction. It’s like your metabolism has hit the brakes, and instead of burning fat, it’s holding onto it for dear life. Reverse dieting is the “reset button” your metabolism needs to start working with you again.

So… Why Have You Heard Some People Say They Gained Weight During a Reverse Diet?

Let’s spill the tea on this one. If you’ve been scared off by stories of people gaining weight during a reverse diet, here’s why that might happen:

1. The Reverse Diet Wasn’t Done Properly.
A true reverse diet isn’t about jumping from 1200 calories to 2500 overnight. When macros aren’t adjusted properly, people end up eating in a calorie surplus instead of gradually increasing intake.

For example, I’ve had clients tell me about coaches who let them gain 30 pounds during a “reverse diet,” calling it part of the process. Spoiler: it’s NOT. If you’re gaining significant weight, your metabolism isn’t healing—it’s just overloaded.

2. Misunderstanding Weight vs. Fat Gain.
Here’s the thing: a small increase on the scale during a reverse diet is totally normal. Why?

  • Water weight: As you increase carbs, your body stores glycogen, which holds water.
  • Fluctuations: It’s normal for weight to vary by 3-5 pounds day to day.

But this doesn’t mean you’re gaining fat. For example, one of my BPM clients, Tiffany, saw the scale go up 5 pounds during her reverse diet. BUT she was eating 1029 more calories, lifting heavier, and all her clothes were too big. She wasn’t gaining fat—her body composition was changing for the better.

3. Misinterpreting the Scale.
If you’re laser-focused on the number on the scale, you’re missing the bigger picture. Weight is just one data point—it doesn’t tell the full story. When I work with BPM clients, I have them track measurements, clothing fit, and progress photos to see the REAL results beyond the scale.

Why Reverse Dieting is a Game-Changer

When done correctly, reverse dieting provides incredible benefits:

  • More energy for your workouts and daily life.
  • Balanced hormones (hello, regular periods and better sleep!).
  • Better digestion and less bloating.
  • The freedom to eat more food without feeling restricted.

Reverse dieting isn’t just about eating more—it’s about giving your body the fuel it needs to thrive.

How to Reverse Diet the Right Way

Reverse dieting is a science, and it’s all about gradual, intentional adjustments. Here’s how it works:

  1. Adjust Macros Individually. Protein, carbs, and fat are increased separately, based on your body’s needs and progress.
  2. Track Progress Indicators. Things like weight fluctuations, bloating, and stress levels are used to guide macro changes.
  3. Prevent Fat Gain. By increasing intake slowly, your metabolism adapts without storing excess calories as fat.

Think of it like building a house. You wouldn’t skip laying the foundation, right? A reverse diet is the foundation your metabolism needs to support sustainable fat loss in the future.

Let’s Debunk Some Myths About Reverse Dieting

Myth: “Eating more will make me gain fat.”
Truth: When done correctly, reverse dieting minimizes fat gain and maximizes metabolic healing.

Myth: “Reverse dieting is only for bodybuilders.”
Truth: Reverse dieting is for anyone who has been dieting or restricting calories and needs to restore their metabolism.
